Shape and structure
What shape do we want the structure to assume? is the question I want to start this discussion with.
10 minutes
I was thinking about bamboo. So I think
10 performance nodes.
You have 3 options:
A. you could place the 10 performance nodes(each a minute long) in a line performing them sequentially.
B. You could stack the 10 performance nodes like pancakes (each node lasting 10 minutes) performing them simultaneously.
C. You could stagger them in some way so that some nodes are sequential and some simultaneous.
When I think about the structure of bamboo I think at first there is a node and then there comes a second node out of it and then a third and so on. All previous nodes stay present even as new ones are introduced. So I imagine the structure of the piece as a cumulative score. Ten nodes unfold over ten minutes. In minute one only node 1 is active. In minute 2, node 1 remains active and node 2 becomes active and so on until in minute 10 all 10 nodes are active.
Then we must allow for decay. Those could simply be randomized gaps.
The shape of each node could be:
A. Continuous, taking the entire assigned
Time. For instance node 4 would last 7 minutes and would involve a performative action lasting 7 minutes.
B. Repeating, with each node being a one minute event being repeated for the length of time assigned.
C. Accelerating, building up speed, getting faster over time. This is simply because the speed of growth of bamboo (4 feet/day) begs a Futurist response.
